The seven-strong group from the company’s Yorkshire division, based in Wakefield, is raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support.
The charity was chosen after senior secretary Ruth Watson battled the same cancer as epic fundraiser, sportswoman and award winner Jane Tomlinson CBE, who died in 2007.
Ruth explained: “I found a lump in my breast last June and following a mammography and biopsy it was confirmed as cancer. I had two operations to remove the affected tissue and then from September to January had chemotherapy every three weeks.”
Ruth was ill in hospital over Christmas and New Year and had her last chemotherapy treatment in January, which was followed by radiotherapy.
Ruth had trained for last year’s event but was unable to take part because of her treatment. This year she will be participating, but will be walking rather than running.
“I’m fully recovered now, but although I don’t have cancer in my spine I can’t run because the treatment has affected my back and my anti-inflammatory system is depressed. I have had steroids and local anaesthetic injected into my spine to relieve the pain recently and been advised not to run,” Ruth added.
Instead, her colleagues David Faraday, Charlotte Underwood, Natalie Devlin, Joanne Hoyland, Andrew Welton and David Connole have taken up the mantle on Ruth’s behalf. They will be running the 10k course in Leeds on July 8th and have been training two or three times a week to build up their speed and distance.
Ruth said: “David started the group off and asked if there was a charity we wanted to raise money for from the cancer charities listed. We chose Macmillan as the work they do benefits everyone with cancer as well as employers and relatives. Macmillan provides practical, medical and financial support for people with cancer as well as pushing for better cancer care.”
