Fun for the all the family – New, free sculpture trail unveiled in Derby

8th November 2021
Redrow - News - Durose Country Park Sculpture Trail

Three handmade sculptures have been officially unveiled at Durose Country Park, on Mansfield Road, in a bid to encourage local people to spend more time in nature and make the most of their local surroundings.

The artworks, created by renowned sculptor Rachel Carter, have been inspired by trees commonly found in Britain, representing the seeds from Horse Chestnut, Elm, Maple and Beech trees. Each sculpture is made from a combination of wax work, bronze and Derbyshire sandstone, and can be found signposting a walking trail around the development.

We’ve also donated more than 100 weaving kits to members of the local community, encouraging them to get arty and create their own sculptures at home. Children from Breadsall Primary School were also delighted to be visited by Rachel for a sculpture workshop of their own, where they created mini versions of the new local features.

Rachel Carter said: “I am delighted to have created the new sculpture trail at Durose Country Park.

“Each sculpture reflects the historic textile industry of the area and provides a sculptural way-marker for the nature walk, which is designed to encourage local people to spend time exploring the nature on their doorstep.

“It was wonderful to get the local community involved in creating their own sculptures, and I look forward to seeing many of them enjoy the official trail for years to come.”

Ryan O’Sullivan, Sales Director for the East Midlands, added: “We’re delighted to unveil the new sculpture trail at Durose Country Park.

“Walking and spending time in nature can be incredibly beneficial for boosting mood, reducing stress and improving sleep quality. Here at Redrow, we’re keen to support Derby locals to look after their wellbeing as much as possible, which is why we were delighted to commission Rachel to help us create a free, accessible trail for families to enjoy.

“This is a wonderful addition to Durose Country Park, and we look forward to welcoming the local community this autumn to the development to enjoy our sculpture trail.”

With easy access to the centre of Derby, the local area is well served by a number of ‘Outstanding’ schools, and also has great proximity to green, open space. The development also has great travel links, with easy access to the A61, A6 and M1.
