New year, new home, new you, new cleaning products?
Most of us start the New Year with the best intentions to get lean, travel more or leave that job we’ve hated for years, but statistics show most of us give up after the first week. The trouble is these are big resolutions that take commitment, time or money, so why not do something you can really achieve this year?
Make small but effective changes that’ll leave you feeling like you’ve done your bit for the environment in 2018…
Green cleaning, like clean eating has gone from niche, and perhaps a little hippy-ish, to mainstream in the past few years. Follow in the footsteps of stars like Gwyneth Paltrow who recently dedicated a post on in her lifestyle blog - entitled ‘The Dirty on Getting Clean’ and switch your harsh chemical cleaners to natural sweet smelling products.
The benefits from switching to more environmentally friendly cleaning methods in your new home are clear:
Fewer chemicals – Better for your skin and the environment
Lower cost - Natural ingredients are cheaper and can often be used many times
More personal –Using your favourite essential oils as cleaners will create a individual scent for your home
Keep your resolution and try out our favourite home-made cleaning products during your spring clean this year.
Homemade All-Purpose Cleaner
• 120ml white vinegar
• 2tbsp baking soda
• 10 drops tea tree, lavender, or lemon essential oil
Mix the vinegar, essential oils and a little water before adding baking soda. Pour into a spray bottle and fill to top with water. Shake to mix ingredients and then spray, wipe with a cloth, and allow it to dry.
The vinegar naturally and effectively kills germs and bacteria, and an essential oil like lavender will leave your house smelling great.
• 250ml water
• 60ml white vinegar
• 8 drops tea tree oil
• 8 drops eucalyptus essential oil
• 8 drops lemon essential oil
• Empty “wipe” container (baby wipes, for example)
• 15 – 20 squares of cloth roughly 10cm2 (old t-shirts work great!)
Fold and place the cloth squares into the empty wipe container and set aside. Mix the water, vinegar, and essential oils. Pour this mixture over the cloths in the container where they will soak in and be ready for you to pull out and use! Wash the cloths and reuse.
But life is all about balance, so if you want to keep your new home smelling fresh the natural way but don’t want to switch your cleaning products try these tips instead:
1. Bring in a few house plants: bamboo, spider plants and cheese plants all absorb pollutants
2. Open the windows! Simple and effective. Even in the winter, opening up your windows for a ten minutes can get fresh air into your home
3. Boil your favourite spice like cinnamon or nutmeg for a fresh, natural, spicy scent and fill your home with fragrance.
Stick to your resolution this year! Make your home welcoming, clean by making a change that is great for you, great for your bank balance and great for the planet too.
