Expand your home outdoors
Our gardens are an extension of our home and a key living space, especially during the summer. Whether you’re relaxing with family or entertaining friends, you can bring your own design style outdoors with the right accessories and soft furnishings.
Whilst there is an array of fantastic garden furniture on sale from high street retailers, specialist independents and online outlets, sometimes all you need are a few scattered cushions and some casual throws to create the right al fresco ambiance.
Pastels look fantastic in the sunshine and we love the rainbow effect of soft linen throws. Add some plumped up cushions with a two tone water-colour effect in shades of coral pink, faded teal and strong lemon for a casually artisan and on-trend look.
Use rustic wooden crates, boxes or pallets for instant shelving. They’re perfect to house your candles and plants or as a place to rest your plates and glasses – and will add a touch of boho-chic style to your summer afternoon picnic. You can also utilise them afterwards to store all your must-have picnic items so they are on hand next time the sun shines.
Celebrate imperfection and serve your food on simple wooden platters and trays or in china and rustic stoneware pots. Remember, you’re among friends and, in the world of the casually artisan picnic, not everything has to match.
Nothing says summer more than fresh, fragrant flowers. Colourful tulips are perfect for those late spring warm spells we’ve been enjoying and at the height of summer gorgeous yellow sunflowers or beautiful blue cornflowers can add a natural vibrancy to your outdoor setting. Hand tie them or arrange them casually in a glass vase. Add colourful plants in natural stone, polished or terracotta pots and introduce some scented candles for extra pizzazz. Soothing citrus scents of orange, lemon and lime, or energising bergamot and lemongrass are some of our favourites.
Illuminate the space
For after dark, great external lights are key to creating a usable and inviting garden.
Focus on the areas you’re likely to spend time in but don’t forget to light up garden paths so you can always find your way. We love using retro style festoon lights strung between trees and along garden fences. Lanterns and candles are also the perfect choice for creating a glow to take you from dusk to dawn.
Relight your fire
There are some fabulous fire pits on the market that are just perfect for warming up on cooler evenings. These now come in all shapes and sizes, so you can either opt for low cost and practical or make a real design statement with a sculptural piece. A great alternative or addition to patio heaters, fire pits encourage a sense of shared community so you can gather round and share stories and drinks long into the night.
