On the shelf
Shelving is no longer a purely practical addition to your home - it’s taking centre stage as a feature in its own right. The humble shelf is now the perfect place to express your artistic side. So, whichever room you’re decorating, it’s time to let shelving shine. Here’s our room by room guide for the styles we think work best.
While kitchen shelving isn’t a new concept, transforming shelves into an aesthetic feature gives them a new lease of life. One of our favourite ways to create a stylish look is by painting shelves the same colour as your feature wall. While the finish is simple to achieve, it’s a look straight from the pages of a design magazine. Try Dulux Waxed Khaki, a cool and relaxed shade that coordinates well with most kitchens. To complete, dress your kitchen shelves with your favourite framed quotes or display condiment jars and herbs thoughtfully to create a piece of cookery inspired art.
If your kitchen and diner is combined then shelves can also be a great way to help define the spaces. Position them next to your breakfast table with books, pictures and colourful pots of greenery.
The dining room
To create a talking point over dinner, artfully arrange picture shelves at different levels and varying positions. Then intersperse with framed artwork and photographs both free standing and on the wall for a gallery effect.
Keep the shelves streamlined – we love the combination of a blonde wood with an on-trend matt black bracket. Finish the look with trailing greenery.
If your style is traditional then match your shelves to a classic sideboard. A white and natural oak blend works beautifully with a painted white sideboard and will complement almost any dining table and chairs.
For a more contemporary room, go for a lightweight metallic construction to create an angular framed unit, which is right on trend. Our In House Design Team loves playing with geometric arrangements and rhythmical patterns to generate optical illusions, so pair with coordinating items like this matt black mirror to achieve the look.
We’d go as far as saying shelving is almost essential in a child’s room. Whether it’s books, gadgets or souvenirs, children like to display the things that mean something to them. Try a simple ‘U’ shaped shelf and fix additional supports in the form of bands or ribbons to the front so your books don’t slide off. While practical it also looks fantastic in wood or white finishes.
Alternatively capture several trends in one by combining a geometric shape with a metallic frame and uneven shelving to display the items they love most, like treasured model cars.
For a softer look you can create a pretty and dreamlike space by adding a white or a light wood shelf with a cute scalloped edge. Arrange with wall-hung framed pictures and signs to create a collage effect.
If you’re looking for shelving for a more grown up space, a long floating picture shelf above a headboard can look elegant and finish a room beautifully. Again, paint your shelf to match your feature wall and overlay your artwork and photos alongside simple accessories for a finish that feels both relaxed and fresh.
Create a welcoming ambiance by adding shelves to your hallway. They’re the perfect choice for an area that can be limited on space. We love simplifying the look with sleek black, white or wood shelves, the perfect neutral backdrop for your favourite accessories. Decorate with white or colourful ceramics and trailing greenery.
For a more contemporary look, this black half-moon floating shelf is the perfect setting for a metallic diffuser and simple ceramics.
A mirror above a single shelf is also a great way to keep the space streamlined and create additional light. Or why not add a curved edge mirror above and below your shelf for a stylish and contemporary impact?
