Leading lights - trends for the new season and beyond
As autumn approaches and the hours of darkness increase, so does the need for effective and elegant lighting in your home.
Your ceiling light, table lamps and feature lighting choices can really set the tone for your interior and you’ll want to balance style with functionality to create the right ambiance.
We asked our in-house Interior Design Team for some trend updates and style advice to help ensure your home glows to perfection …
All that glistens…
Metallics are still the top design choice for lighting this autumn and winter. Whether it’s gold, chrome, or bronze, metallics are the perfect way to bring a sense of warmth indoors through the colder months.
We love the sense of grandeur metallic accessories can bring to the home and the trend for lavish lighting is stepping things up a gear.
When it comes to finishes, there’s an array of choices, from highly polished to eroded surfaces. A time or weather-worn effect can look alluring and beautiful, especially when it catches the light.
If your style is traditional, a tarnished gold six light pendant is a sophisticated choice or, for a contemporary look, opt for sweeping sculptural curves.
Black remains one of the year’s key colours for interiors, and it’s set to be just as popular in 2020. It’s a bold choice and has the potential to overpower a room so our designers adopt the mantra that ‘less is more’. Lighting is therefore the perfect way to introduce black into your home in a subtle way.
Matt black is one of our favourite finishes and can create a very opulent look, especially when paired with accents of gold. Opt for refined industrial forms for a modern and space-saving bedside light or make a bold statement in a contemporary living room.
Orbs and spheres have been popular throughout the year and continue to have a major influence on lighting design. They can bring a dreamlike luminance to a bedroom as well as being an elegant choice for a lounge ceiling light.
Pair globe shapes with matt black or metallics and you’re on to a serious style winner.
Lamp bases are the perfect canvas for introducing texture into your room. Tactile, rippled ceramics and moulded glass are capturing the sculptural element of liquids in solid form and it’s a trend we love. The fluidity of the designs really play with light and shadows, so it’s the perfect choice for a lamp. Go for an injection of textured colour or a softer neutral tone in your ceramics, while a white shade with a moulded glass base is subtle and relaxing for a bedroom.
Crafted to perfection
Finally, we’re big fans of using handcrafted pieces in our Show Homes, which play on the beauty of natural materials and organic forms. From hand-worked, embellished lamp bases to artisanal light shades made from natural fibres, you can really be creative with your choices.
Materials range from marble to concrete while textures range from wavy to smooth, so you’re sure to find something you’ll love. And choosing handmade items is a great way to support traditional makers and crafters.
