Topping out ceremony marks a milestone at London's West Works development
A ceremony with roots stretching back thousands of years took place at a Redrow development which is at the forefront of plans to regenerate a London community.
We hosted a topping out ceremony at our latest scheme in Southall, the West Works.
The event was held to celebrate the completion of the top part of the apartment building – a significant milestone in the construction of the new homes for local residents.
Topping out ceremonies are a practice which dates back thousands of years, some accounts track the first known instance to Egyptians, who placed a plant on top of pyramids to honour construction workers. Now, in modern construction, the ceremony is celebrated in different ways around the world.
Our event at The West Works on June 13 was attended by Southall MP, Virendra Sharma and councillors from Ealing Council, as well as the site team, local business owners and existing residents.
Simon Halfhide, sales director for the Southall site, spoke to attendees at the top of the building about the sense of community in Southall and the opportunity for the area to thrive from the inward investment and regeneration underway. The event concluded with a performance from local dance troupe, and refreshments in the marketing suite.

Simon Halfhide, West London Sales Director, said: “It is fantastic to have the opportunity to bring the local community together to celebrate our construction milestone, and I would like to thank Virendra Sharma MP for joining us to mark the occasion. In recent years Southall has been identified as an opportunity area and has received significant funding to create a clearly defined town centre and, once it opens, will benefit from Crossrail.
“But it is not all about regeneration and new transport links. Southall is also a place of parks, trees, shopping, restaurants, arts and culture. There is a strong sense of history and community in Southall. It is fantastic to see community ties like this in the Capital and our new homes are giving the existing community the opportunity to stay close to family and friends.
“I would like to thank the hard work of our sub-contractors and suppliers who have done an outstanding job in delivering the new homes at The West Works.”
Virendra Sharma, MP for Ealing Southall, added: “It was great to be able to join the Redrow team, Ealing Councillors and Southall residents to celebrate the topping out ceremony.
“The new homes at The West Works will bring much needed new housing to the area, and will also help to transform disused brownfield land surrounding the station. It is very exciting to witness the huge regeneration that is taking place in the wider Southall area, which will provide local residents with more opportunities for living and working.”
