Community radio station KiCFM has now relocated to a new home with a helping hand from housebuilder Redrow.
The charity operates from a studio based in an articulated trailer, which for seven years had been located in the grounds of the University of Wolverhampton’s former business school at Compton Park.
When the land was acquired by Redrow for redevelopment the charity secured a new home at the City of Wolverhampton College but had no way of moving the studio there.
KiCFM’s Rob Smith said: “There’s less than a mile between the two sites, but the size of our studio meant that moving it would have been expensive and as a charity we simply didn’t have the spare funds to finance the move. We’re really grateful to Redrow for preparing the site at the college, arranging for an articulated truck to move the studio and installing our electricity and phone line.”
The station is now back up and running – broadcasting over the internet and preparing to launch a new training course for unemployed 18 -24-year-olds to learn radio production. Those trainees will then present radio programmes on KiCFM.
Mark Marsh, technical director for Redrow Homes (Midlands), paid a home visit to the station to see the trainees in action. They put their newly acquired skills into action asking Mark for advice on working in the housing industry and how to get on a foot on to the property ladder.
Matthew Pratt, managing director for Redrow Homes (Midlands), said: “Our business is building new homes and creating communities. We also like to get involved in existing communities in the areas where we build and were delighted to be able to help KiCFM relocate. We hope that they will be very happy in their new home and that the young people who they train will have bright futures.”
KiCFM broadcasts live on the internet 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Log on to www.kicfm.com to tune in.
