A brand new home in Great Wyrley has all the space Mandy and Chris Grierson wanted and came at a price they could afford thanks to Help to Buy.
Already fans of Redrow, they were delighted to find their preferred developer was building close to Birmingham when Chris accepted a new job in the city.
Initially they rented a flat where Chris lived during the week, returning to the family home in Wirral at weekends, but after 18 months they decided to up sticks and relocate.
By then, the introduction of Help to Buy equity loans meant they could purchase a larger home than they expected at Redrow’s Oakwood Grange in Great Wyrley, providing ample room for when friends and family come to stay.
Chris, managing director of an anodising (adding colour to aluminium) business, explains: “We’d previously looked at Redrow homes in Wirral and North Wales before the job in Birmingham came up and we knew they had a reputation as a quality developer; but we’d forgotten just how much they include. Fixtures and fittings that come as standard from Redrow are frequently upgrades with other developers.
“We sold our old house and were a little worried we wouldn’t find a Redrow house that would be ready to move into quickly. But by the time we applied for Help to Buy, secured a mortgage and completed all of the paperwork our new home was ready to move into.”
Close to the motorway network, Oakwood Grange is ideally located for Chris to travel to work and puts the couple within easy reach of friends and family in Wirral. There are retail parks nearby, plus they can walk their dog in Chasewater Country Park.
They’ve chosen a four-bedroom detached Shrewsbury house design from Redrow’s popular Heritage Collection.
“We fell in love with the layout of the Shrewsbury. The great thing about it is that all four bedrooms are doubles, so the guest room isn’t a box room but somewhere we can comfortably accommodate friends and family,” Chris adds.
“We didn’t have much equity in our old home but with a Help to Buy equity loan we didn’t have to compromise as it gave us the flexibility to buy the house we wanted without a hefty deposit.”
Oakwood Grange features a choice of three and four-bedroom homes from Redrow’s ‘Arts & crafts’ influenced Heritage Collection. Traditional looking on the outside, inside they boast bright, modern interiors.
Current prices start from £159,995 for a three-bedroom Evesham or an initial outlay of only £127,996 for customers who use Help to Buy. The remaining 20% share is covered by an equity loan, which is interest free for five years.
After reserving their new home Chris and Mandy used the award-winning ‘My Redrow’ service on the developer’s website to personalise their home and keep track of progress. Among other things they were able to choose the finish of their kitchen cabinets, bathroom tiles and other features – all in their own time.
“It helped us visualise how our new home would look. We felt that we were able to make the house personal to us and our tastes,” Chris explains.
And because it’s brand new, their home at Oakwood Grange is full of energy efficient measures which should help Chris and Mandy save money on their fuel bills.
“We noticed straight away how much warmer it is. In the old house the thermostat had to be set to max to feel the benefit but now the dial’s set lower and we don’t have the heating on upstairs,” Chris adds.
