A crew of fundraisers who took part in a gruelling charity canoe challenge across Northamptonshire are riding on the crest of a wave after raising more than £1,170 for CLIC Sargent.
Scott Chamberlain, supported each day in turn by colleagues Philip Clark, James Tracey, Michael Glass started the ‘oar deal’ when Scott and Philip left the Redrow Homes (South Midlands) headquarters in Northampton on Friday morning (May 2). Over the course of four days the team covered approximately 94 miles along the River Nene, including navigating 35 locks. The final destination was The Wash, at Sutton Bridge in Lincolnshire.
Their Northampton to the Sea challenge forms part of the housebuilder’s 40th anniversary celebrations, with employees from Redrow housing divisions across England and Wales competing to raise as much money as possible for selected local causes.
In the South Midlands, staff are raising money for CLIC Sargent as the charity has been supporting the family of sales consultant Mandy Howie whose daughter Chase has a rare form of Sarcoma cancer.
Scott, a senior project coordinator, says: “I knew it would be quite gruelling and because I had navigated the locks before I knew how tough they would be but because I was camping I didn’t recover properly overnight but it was great that each morning I had a new team member rearing to go during the day supporting me. One night the temperature dropped below zero and there was a frost on the inside of the tent.
“There were times when I thought I couldn’t go on but knowing that we were raising money for a cause close to home helped me dig deep and carry on. The support of family, friends, colleagues and people we met along the way was overwhelming and provided great motivation.”
Scott and his support team initially hoped to raise £500 but have already reached more than double their target with a total raised so far of £1,170. There’s still chance to sponsor them via www.justgiving.com/Scott-Chamberlain.
