Redrow staff raise £30,000 for charity that's close to home
Inspired by a teenager’s battle with cancer, Redrow staff have raised almost £30,000 for CLIC Sargent.
The generous donation of £29,318.52 follows a year-long ‘charity challenge’ as part of the award-winning homebuilder’s 40th anniversary celebrations, which saw employees take part in a range of stunts and activities to raise money for good causes.
Each of the company’s operational divisions, plus employees from its Group headquarters and sister company Harrow Estates, selected local charities to focus their fundraising efforts on for the year.
The Northampton-based South Midlands team chose the children’s cancer charity CLIC Sargent, as the organisation has supported the family of Redrow sales consultant Mandy Howie.
Mandy’s daughter Chase, who turns 18 this month, was just 16 when she was diagnosed with Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare cancer that can develop in the muscle, bone, nerves, cartilage, tendons, blood vessels and the fatty and fibrous tissues.
John Mann, managing director for Redrow Homes (South Midlands), said: “Mandy is a much respected member of our team and so supporting CLIC Sargent as part of our 40th anniversary charity challenge was an easy choice to make. Chase’s story really captured our hearts and spurred us on to raise as much money as possible. Everyone embraced the challenge and I’m proud of everyone who took part.”
As part of the fundraising John ran in last year’s London marathon; while daredevil receptionist Sabrina Dunk leapt at the chance to go skydiving and an ‘oarsome’ team took part in a canoe challenge from Northampton to the sea. Other events included staff donning hair pieces for ‘Wig Wednesday’ and a charity dinner.
Lydia Buckmaster, CLIC Sargent fundraising manager for the North Central area, said: “The efforts that all of the Redrow staff have gone to in order to raise this incredible amount of money is absolutely amazing. A massive thank you to every single one of them is thoroughly deserved. The money raised could be used to fund a play specialist for a year – someone who can help children prepare for and cope with treatment by using models, toys and pictures to explain what will happen.”
CLIC Sargent is the UK’s leading cancer charity for children, young people and their families. It provides clinical, practical, financial and emotional support to help them cope with cancer and get the most out of life from diagnosis onwards.
