First time buyers leap on to the property ladder in Telford
While many couples will celebrate their anniversary with a meal, Lee Merrick and Jennifer Davis marked the occasion in a way they’ll remember forever – by buying their first home.
The pair, Lee, an operating department practitioner, and Jennifer, a social worker, had been living with Jennifer’s parents while they saved for a deposit for a place of their own.
They found their ever after home at Redrow’s Trenchwood Gardens development in Telford.
Lee explains: “We both work in Wolverhampton and looked at Redrow’s Compton Park development, but our budget wouldn’t stretch that far. Trenchwood Gardens was the next best thing. There’s a woodland close by and it’s within easy driving distance of Wolverhampton.
“We’d been looking at a different house when the sales consultant told us a four-bedroom Shaftesbury had become available. We went to see it on our anniversary, March 6, and reserved the same day even though it meant we ended up missing our restaurant reservation!”
The couple, both 27, fell in love with the detached Shaftesbury’s spacious layout including open plan kitchen and dining room and separate lounge.
The Government’s Help to Buy equity loan scheme helped make their dream move a reality.
“When we looked at the house we loved it but didn’t think we’d be able to afford it. Help to Buy made quite a big difference and got us moving quicker as we would have had to save longer without it,” Lee adds.
“When we showed our families the house we were buying they were surprised and pleased. Not many people buy a house like this as their first home at such a young age, but hopefully it means we won’t have to move again and we’ll be able to grow into it.”
A four-bedroom detached Shaftesbury like Lee and Jennifer’s is available from £239,995. Help to Buy reduces the initial cost to £191,996 including a 75% mortgage and 5% deposit. The remaining 20% is covered by the equity loan, which is interest free for five years.
Lee says: “The sales team were really good explaining things to us and recommending solicitors. We have friends who are looking to buy and we’re trying to encourage them to use Help to Buy. Redrow are the best developers out there at the moment and if we were to move we’d definitely buy from them again.”
