When they decided to settle down and make a move onto the property ladder, Francis Burrows and Scott Conroy soon learned London would limit them.
They were already paying £1,500 a month to rent a one-bedroom flat and to buy it would have cost £350,000.
“That just seemed crazy,” says Francis. “So we decided to look around the Telford area, where my family live, and what we have got for our money here is amazing. We are thrilled and couldn’t be happier. We have got a far better property and a better way of life.”
The pair opted for a three-bedroom detached Abode style home by Redrow. Abode properties enjoy ‘uncluttered’ but smart façades with a host of in vogue interior features including underfloor heating, plus banks of discreet storage units.
In Francis and Scott’s home in Leegomery, the ground floor has an open plan kitchen, living and dining area. The lounge and master bedroom with en-suite are on the first floor, while the remaining two bedrooms and shower room are on the top floor.
Francis adds: “After just a few weeks in our new house, it already feels like home.”
Francis, 35, a manager for the Care Quality Commission, and Scott, 42, who works for Walsall Housing Trust, moved to the area in April last year and started looking at properties straight away.
“We looked at Telford because of ease of access and value for money,” says Francis. “I frequently work from home so I wanted a house with an additional room to use as an office, but from which I could easily get to Birmingham where our main office is. Scott needs to get into Walsall so it is an easy journey for both of us.
“When it came to properties we looked at a lot of developments but we loved the style of the Abode homes with the open plan layout on the ground floor. Our old flat was open plan and that had worked for us.
“Having the added lounge on the first floor gives us a cosy, private space to go to in the evening and we love the big windows, particularly on the top floor where I have my office. I have got a great view, I can see the tree tops and watch the clouds floating by, which is important because it makes it a nice place to work.
“We paid £250,000 for the house which is fantastic when you consider the amount of space we have got, the garage and the driveway on which we can fit three cars.”
Francis and Scott chose an interior designer to help style the property and put their stamp on it: “We wanted to make sure it was exactly how we wanted,” continues Francis.
“The ground floor is completely finished with a teal and light grey colour scheme with accents of copper picked up through the accessories.
“The designer found a fantastic unit, a 1970s’ G-plan sideboard, which has been renovated with a fantastic splash of colour on the front. Our home is everything we wanted it to be – and more.
“And it’s lovely to be able to pop round and see my mum or my brother. It’s nice to be back home.”
