A partnership approach to training is helping Redrow equip electrical apprentices in the Midlands with new skills.
The housebuilder has one of the industry’s best records for training and developing its staff and around 15% of its 2,200 employees are trainees.
Redrow has a long-standing working relationship with Nottingham-based MA Broughton Electrical Contractors going back over 20 years.
Ahead of National Apprenticeship Week (March 6 -10) and in support of the training Redrow gives apprentices, MA Broughton has hosted placements for two trainees offering coaching and training in aspects of electrical work they may not have the chance to experience working on site.
Former South Charnwood High School student Nathan Bridges, 17, is usually based at Hamilton Park in Hamilton, Leicester.
“My dad works for Redrow and used to be a joiner and kitchen fitter. I always wanted to work in construction and after my dad bought me a soldering kit and circuit boards, I thought training to be an electrician would be the best route,” Nathan said.
“I only started my apprenticeship in October and working with MA Broughton has helped me get an understanding of heating systems, grid switches and consumer units.”
Fellow apprentice Shane Bagby, 19, from Tamworth, always wanted to be an electrician and jumped at the chance to train with Redrow.
“I’ve been learning the basic skills required to wire a house at the Pennine Grange development in Tamworth, but this week-long placement has given me a better understanding of some of the other skills and work involved in being an electrician,” Shane, who attended Perry Beeches School, said.
Mark Broughton, managing director of MA Broughton, said: “Having trained electrical apprentices for over 30 years and understanding the complexities of producing fully qualified, competent electricians, we were pleased to support Redrow’s training of electrical apprentices. In conjunction with Redrow we devised a week-long training programme to provide and insight into the day to day workings of an electrical contracting company, covering aspects that the Redrow site-based programme cannot provide and utilising MA Broughton’s training facilities, stores and warehouse and technical departments.”
Clare Horton, new entrant programmes manager for Redrow, added: “We’re very proud of our apprenticeship programme and are constantly looking for ways to improve and develop the training we offer so that our apprentices gain the experience skills they need to pursue successful careers in the industry. We’re grateful to MA Broughton for sharing their expertise to enhance the learning of our apprentices, who usually divide their time between working on our construction sites and attending college.”
