Redrow Apprentice's brush with MP
The pair first met in October 2017 when Elizabeth was highly commended in the Youth Build Awards.
“Meeting Liz Kendall was eye opening as I didn’t expect her to be so involved,” Elizabeth said.
“I was really happy for her to come and see me on site. It was great to be able to show her some of the skills and techniques I’ve learned during my apprenticeship including caulking and filling, followed by painting.”
Redrow’s workforces includes a record number of trainees. Almost a quarter of Redrow’s trainees are female.
Third year apprentice painter and decorator Elizabeth, 24, discovered her flair for painting and decorating while on a Prince’s Trust scheme and decided to make it her career.
Elizabeth has dyslexia which was undiagnosed until she was at college. Her determination to success despite this, and other personal issues, has set her apart from her peers.
Along with the Youth Build Awards she’s also achieved recognition in the Women in Construction Awards, making it onto the shortlist in the best apprentice under 25 category.
Liz Kendall, Member of Parliament for Leicester West said: “I was thrilled to visit Elizabeth on site and learn more about her apprenticeship and see the amazing work she is doing.
“I am so proud of her and all that she has achieved. She has had to battle through difficulties in her personal life, but her hard-work and determination to succeed is clear to see.
“I know that Elizabeth has a very bright future ahead of her and she plans to one day run her own business. I am determined to do all I can to support Elizabeth and other young apprentices build a better life for themselves.”
