New wave of under-graduates begin building a career
It's crucial in today’s competitive job market for young people to gain the edge on the competition – and that’s exactly what Redrow hopes to give its latest intake of under-graduate trainees.
Seven new recruits have joined the fold for a year-long placement, filling the shoes of last year’s intake who are returning to university to complete their degrees.
Typifying Redrow’s commitment to investing in young people and training, it runs an annual under-graduate training programme, which provides work experience for university students as well as benefitting the industry by identifying potential future stars.
The students are based at Redrow’s divisional offices and on building sites across England and Wales in various departments, which complement their degree studies.
Currently Daniel Modashia and Leigh Fitzpatrick are based in Chorley, Lancashire, in the construction department; Joe Underwood is in the South Wales technical department, in Cardiff; Jordan Van Laun is at the South West divisional HQ in Bristol working with the land team; Luke Matthews is at Redrow (NW) based in Ewloe, Flintshire with the commercial team; Rebecca Don joins the Yorkshire technical team in Wakefield; and Tom Wade will work with Group marketing at Redrow’s head office in Ewloe.
One new recruit who is relishing the opportunity provided by Redrow is Luke Matthews, who is currently working towards a BSc (Hons) in Quantity Surveying Studies at Liverpool John Moores University.
The 20-year-old from Fazakerley in Liverpool, has already completed two years of his degree course. He views the work placement not only as an opportunity to put the skills he has learnt in the lecture hall to good use, but really build on his practical knowledge.
He said: “I tend to learn by doing rather than in the classroom so the placements offered by Redrow are invaluable to students like me. By gaining on the job experience I’m seeing how everything I’ve learnt so far can be applied while gaining so much more knowledge from the experience.
“Housebuilding is a career that really appeals to me as there are so many different aspects to it. It’s a sector I’d like to stay involved with in the future.”
One of last year’s undergraduates who can vouch for the value of the training programme is Josh Ward-Jones, 21, from Solihull, who has just returned to the University of Reading to complete his BSc honours degree in Building Surveying. He spent four months each in the construction, commercial and technical departments of Redrow Homes (Midlands), in Tamworth. This included working as an acting assistant site manager at two Redrow developments in Worcester.
“The site experience was really invaluable. I was able to see first-hand how the homes are built from the ground up. They teach you the theory at university but you can’t beat the real thing,” Josh said.
“I’ve improved my communication skills, my CAD skills and my technical knowledge immensely during the past year and experiences like the Management and Leadership Challenge were great for developing team skills. All of this will hopefully give me the edge over other graduates when we enter the job market at the end of our studies.”
Richard Beadsmoore, group training and development manager for Redrow, says: “We’re delighted that the under-graduates leaving us have enjoyed the experience and we hope they have gained much that will benefit them in their future working lives. As we welcome seven new recruits we hope we can stand them in equally good stead to embark on a successful career in housebuilding. By committing to the recruitment and training of young people we will ensure that we continue to attract talented individuals to work in the sector thus ensuring a profitable future for our business.”
Redrow are in the process of recruiting 20 new apprentices and also runs a post-graduate training programme. These and other training initiatives contributed to them being included in Building magazine’s list of top employers last year.
