Apprentices rewarded as they build their careers
As competition for apprenticeship places increases, five trainees who stand out above their peers have been recognised for their efforts by developer Redrow.
The housebuilder’s Apprentice of the Year Award is always hotly contended by those learning the tricks of the various trades at Redrow developments across England and Wales.
Andrew Clatworthy, 26, a trainee plumber based at Alexandra Gate in Newport, has been named year one apprentice of the year, with the year 2+ title going to carpentry apprentice Matthew Ball, 19, based at Earl’s Park in Worcester.
Andrew is a qualified mechanical engineer who decided to change careers after being made redundant.
“I’m grateful for the opportunity Redrow has given me. It’s been a great experience so far and I’ve been learning a lot and trying my best,” he said. “Being named apprentice of the year is great as it means I’m doing things right. It’s satisfying to know I’m hitting the target.”
For year 2+ winner Matthew, the highlight to date has been learning how to put a roof on a house while working close to home.
“I would recommend apprenticeships 100% without a doubt,” he said. “It gives you the chance to get hands on work experience and learn so much. It’s great to see that you’re helping to make a difference to the local area too.”
Second year bricklaying apprentices Chris Martin, 20, based at Willow Gardens in Hailsham, and Robert Jones, 19, based at Woodville Gardens, Moston, were highly commended along with 18-year-old Liam Sargent , a first year apprentice bricklayer based at Lancaster Place and Barrows Green in Widnes.
Richard Beadsmoore, Redrow’s Group training and development manager, said: “Figures from the National Apprenticeship Service suggest that an average of 11 applications are received for every apprenticeship role available. While we’ve more than doubled our intake this year, we’ve also seen an increase in enquiries as more people look toward learning a trade as a viable alternative to pursuing a more traditionally academic career path such as university. Many others, like Andrew, see it as an opportunity to retrain and learn valuable new skills.
“Apprenticeships aren’t an easy option and there’s lots of hard work involved both on site and at college. Our Apprentice of the Year awards recognise and reward the sterling efforts of our trainees throughout the year. I extend my congratulations to all of our apprentices who’ve helped in the construction of our new homes across England and Wales.”
The Redrow apprenticeship programme combines ‘on-the-job’ paid work and an NVQ completed over three years.
Apprentices are placed with an experienced and trusted sub-contractor, where they can learn the skills required to do their chosen job whilst working on Redrow developments and also going to college one day a week.
