Homebuilder installs lifesaving equipment in every office
With backing from a heart charity and professional footballer Fabrice Muamba Redrow Homes has placed lifesaving defibrillators in each of its main offices across England and Wales.
Muamba is an ambassador for Arrhythmia Alliance (A-A), The Heart Rhythm Charity, and, as part of the charity’s “Defibs Save Lives” campaign, Redrow has installed 11 more machines. It now has one at every divisional head office in England and Wales and is believed to be the first UK housebuilder to take such steps.
The decision has been endorsed by Muamba, who himself received 15 defibrillator shocks following his collapse on the football pitch in 2012. He suffered a severe cardiac arrest while playing in an FA Cup match between Bolton Wanderers and Tottenham Hotspur.
He said: “It’s great to see companies such as Redrow recognising the importance of having defibrillators in more places. We’re campaigning to ensure as many people as possible have access to this lifesaving equipment should they ever need it.”
A defibrillator delivers a therapeutic dose of electrical energy to the body to restore a regular heartbeat. A survey by the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health has indicated that the device can increase the chance of survival from a sudden cardiac arrest by 75%.
Redrow invested in its first defibrillator last year for its UK headquarters, following the death of a site manager from a sudden cardiac arrest, but the company was keen to do more.
Redrow’s health and safety director Dave Ford said: “It’s been fantastic to link up with Arrhythmia Alliance and see the work they are doing. Having access to lifesaving equipment such as defibrillators in the workplace is extremely important. Sadly, we lost a colleague to a sudden cardiac arrest last year and we wanted to see what could be done to reduce the risk of a similar tragedy happening again. This is another step in the right direction for us and eventually I hope that we can install one at every new development, which can be accessed not only by our workforce, but also by people living in the new communities we are building.”
Trudie Lobban MBE, founder and trustee of Arrhythmia Alliance, said: “Redrow is setting a great example for other companies by putting the health and safety of their employees first and ensuring more of them can access equipment such as defibrillators at their place of work.”
Trudie first set up a charity in 1993 called STARS as a result of her own daughter being diagnosed with Reflex Anoxic Seizures (RAS). In May 2004, she established Arrhythmia Alliance, a coalition of charities, patient groups, healthcare professionals, Government and industry allies. Six years ago, Trudie tragically lost her husband Charles to a sudden cardiac arrest. He had been instrumental to the success of the A-A and his death strengthened Trudie’s determination to continue the charity’s work, which is already underway in 30 countries.
She added: “The impact arrhythmias have on people, their family, friends and colleagues can be devastating. We’re campaigning to have automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in all public places.”
Earlier this year Fabrice and his wife Shauna Muamba launched a new business ‘Mrs Muamba’s Caribbean cooking sauces’. A small donation from the sale of every jar at Booths will go to the Arrhythmia Alliance charity.
