Laying foundations for site managers of the future
A new course has been launched to provide trainees with the skills to become the site manager of the future.
Redrow has re-launched its trainee site assistant programme, which now provides participants with formal qualifications and is the first scheme of its kind to be backed by NHBC (National House-Building Council).
The FTSE 250 housebuilder has partnered with NHBC and South Staffordshire College to create a new course that combines classroom learning and practical, ‘on the job’ experience.
Delivered in house by Redrow, the first intake of 24 students has started the programme. Each will now work towards a BTEC Level 3 in Construction & the Built Environment, developed by South Staffordshire College, and a NVQ Level 3 in Contracting, developed alongside NHBC.
A range of candidates have been promoted onto the course including apprentices, labourers and forklift drivers.
Karen Jones, HR director for Redrow Homes, said: “This programme has been developed with our partners to provide site workers with the skills, knowledge and attributes to eventually supervise their own building sites. It’s a springboard towards management, giving our most promising employees the opportunity to grow with our rapidly changing business and put down solid foundations for a successful career.”
The participants will combine their learning, done on block release, with working on site at one of over 100 Redrow developments in England and Wales.
Rob Lockey, training and analysis manager at NHBC, said: “NHBC is delighted to be supporting Redrow Homes by delivering the NVQ element of the apprentice programme for trainee assistant site managers – the first such programme we have been involved with in this way. This builds on our existing strong relationship with Redrow delivering a range of NVQ and training programmes. At a time when the industry is struggling to recruit sufficient skilled staff at all levels it is to Redrow’s credit that they are running a trainee site management programme.”
John Renshaw, apprenticeships manager at South Staffordshire College, said: “As an organisation we work with lots of private and different public sector organisations to train and up-skill their work forces but this is the first time we’ve created a course of this kind for an employee in the construction industry. Working with Redrow our aim is to provide the knowledge and professional qualifications site assistants need to do their job, as well as the skills to motivate a team and boost morale on site.”
Redrow has run similar schemes previously but this is the first structured scheme to result in formal qualifications.
