Setting sustainability standards
Housebuilder Redrow has demonstrated its commitment to improving environmental performance by achieving an external, independently assessed standard.
The company, which builds approximately 3,000 new homes in England and Wales annually, has been awarded British Standard 8555 Level 2.
Nicola Owen, recently appointed sustainability manager at Redrow’s UK headquarters in Flintshire, said: “BS8555 is a formal system that has helped us to establish our significant environmental impacts and to develop objectives and targets to control them. The aim is to ensure we prevent pollution and maintain legal compliance as well as make financial savings. Achieving the level 2 standard demonstrates that we have a plan in place and an ongoing commitment to sustainability issues.”
Having passed its initial audit Redrow’s performance will now be reviewed on an annual basis.
The British Standard is the latest evidence of the continually improving culture of corporate social responsibility that exists at Redrow. The company’s efforts to be more sustainable include a commitment to developing its staff, caring for customers, enhancing local communities and reducing its carbon footprint.
Employees across England and Wales have formed ‘green teams’ dedicated to reducing Redrow’s environmental impact; and the business will publish its second major sustainability report this autumn, which is expected to show significant gains on last year.
The 2013 report revealed that Redrow already diverts more than 93% of site waste from landfill and that 99.53% of the timber it uses is credibly certified by the World Wildlife Fund Forestry Trade Network as being responsibly sourced. In addition, Redrow spent £1.5m on ecology in 2013 and contributed over £40m to fund community infrastructure such as schools, roads, community buildings, sports centres and social housing.
