A sustainable way to train
As it undertakes a rapid expansion, one housebuilder is finding new ways to encourage employees’ personal development while maintaining a sustainable business.
FTSE 250 company Redrow, which has increased its workforce by 21% in the last 12 months, taking on 230 new employees, has launched its own electronic learning (eLearning) portal.
Not only does ‘My Redrow eLearning’ offer a wider range of tailored short courses via the company’s intranet, and give employees the opportunity to access resources at a time and place to suit them, it also helps to reduce Redrow’s carbon footprint by limiting the need for employees to travel for training.
Karen Jones, HR director for Redrow Homes, said: “While face to face courses at our dedicated training centre will still play an important role in employee development, eLearning will give us scope to offer more personalised training for our staff and provide inductions for new starters very efficiently. It’s ideal to deliver bite-size sessions and enables the business and our employees to react quickly to new challenges.”

It is estimated the platform will provide an addition 1,440 training days per year for employees and save 3,500 gallons of fuel on average every 12 months by reducing the amount of travel required to undertake training courses.
Rolled out over the summer, all Redrow employees from apprentices to directors can now access more than 10 hours of course material via a computer, with 19 new courses being developed. It’s designed to fit into busy schedules and each person has an individual portfolio of modules when they log in, which is adjusted as they progress through their careers. Courses cover topics such as company structure, computer skills and health and safety; they feature rich multimedia including videos and audio or participants can opt to read the information if they prefer.
Karen added: “We’ve surveyed 280 employees who have already undertaken eLearning and the feedback we’ve received has been very positive. 95% said they had attained new information and 94% would recommend it to a colleague.
“The lifeblood of any business is its people and, together with our recruitment strategy to attract the top talent, the quality of our training is another differential that can set us apart from competitors. The scope for eLearning is huge and we’ll be looking to develop the number of specialist courses available, which will ensure all staff can access the training they need to do their job to the highest standards.”
