In cooperation with the independent data company, Statista, the FT has revealed details of impressive corporate progress in fighting climate change, and we’re in good company. The 300 companies included in the FT’s inaugural listing of Europe’s Climate Leaders achieved the greatest reduction in their greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) between 2014 and 2019.

All European companies – defined as having headquarters in one of 33 European countries – with a minimum revenue of €40 million or €36 million in 2019 were eligible for consideration. To compile the ranking, Statista undertook rigorous desk research and potential participants completed detailed questionnaires.

We’ve made significant strides in our sustainability efforts since 2014, having reduced core emissions by 10% year on year, aligned with revenue growth.

Julia Green, recently appointed Head of Sustainability, commented on the achievement: “We’re thrilled to have been recognised by the Financial Times as one of Europe’s Climate Leaders. As the climate emergency comes into sharper focus, there is more that Europe’s largest businesses can be doing to reduce emissions, and we will continue to push the boundaries of sustainable operations. We are committed to playing our part in the UK’s transition to net-zero, with the development of our zero carbon roadmap and reduction targets”.

Our sustainability achievements aren’t exclusive to the reduction in GHG emissions. Leaning into the philosophy of building responsibly, we notably launched our Reduce the Rubble initiative last year. The programme is designed to identify ways to reduce waste throughout the process of building a home, to help meet the target of reducing construction waste intensity by 10% by 2022. In 2020 we diverted the vast majority, 97%, of construction waste from landfill.

Beyond waste reduction, creating thriving communities remains at the forefront of the housebuilder’s agenda. In Q3 2020, we achieved the Global Good Company of the Year Silver award in recognition of our social impact and launched our ‘Nature for People’ biodiversity strategy, established as part of a long-standing partnership with charity The Wildlife Trusts.
