Run Winsford set to build on its success with help from Redrow
Only in its second year, the 10km multi-terrain run around the town has already attracted 350 online registrations and up to 400 runners are expected on the day.
Last year’s event won the award for Community Initiative of the Year at the Mayor’s Oscars 2012 after attracting 300 entrants.
New sponsors on board for this year include local housebuilder Redrow Homes, which has provided 40 hi-visibility vests for the race stewards and 400 water bottles for the goody bags.
The two main sponsors of the not-for-profit event are Winsford Town Council, who supported the inaugural event last year, and Compass Minerals, who will host the event village at their site. The Old Star, Winsford, is sponsoring race prizes and origanisers also receive support from the landowners of this fantastic course including Vale Royal Abbey.
It’s open to runners of all abilities and there will be a hot food and stalls available on the day for participants and spectators. Winsford comedian Don Reid will host the event, and the Town Mayor has also been invited to open the race.
Race organiser Drew Burrows said: “We’re so grateful to all our sponsors for their support, including our new sponsors Redrow Homes. Without them all, the race would not be possible. It’s only the second event of this kind that has been held in Winsford and already we’ve been able to build on the success of last year to create an even bigger and better event.
“We’ll be raising money for our affiliated charities, Macmillan Cancer Support and the NeuroMuscular Centre, but entrants are invited to raise money for the charity of their choice.”
Anita Williams, sales director for Redrow Homes (NW), which is building family homes at the nearby St John’s Wood development, said: “More than just a housebuilder, we like to get involved in the communities in which we build. The Run Winsford 10k is a fantastic local event and we were keen to offer our support.”
As a non-competitive runner himself Drew wanted to hold a 10k run that was open to everyone. He added: “We welcome runners of all abilities, from elite to first time runners. Hopefully we’ve started something that can grow steadily and become an annual event for the town.”
The 10k race will start at 11am. Entry is £20 for an individual or £55 for a team of three. Runners are asked to pre-register online at www.runwinsford.com, closing date for entries will be around 19th October, on the day entries are not available.
