Hospice gets £13k boost for vital services
A Central Lancashire hospice can only continue its good work through voluntary fundraising, so a donation of £13,000 from staff at Redrow Homes has given the charity a big boost.
Redrow’s gift to St Catherine’s Hospice, in Lostock Hall, will support its valuable work helping people across the region who are affected by life-shortening conditions.
The award winning housebuilder has spent the last 12 months raising money across all of its divisions in a ‘charity challenge’ to mark the company’s 40th anniversary celebrations. The Lancashire division, based at Buckshaw Village, near Chorley, chose St Catherine’s Hospice as one of its charities and, thanks to a Sportsman’s Dinner, was able to hand over a whopping cheque for £12,906.69.
St Catherine’s offers a wide variety of services, including the in-patient and day therapy units in Lostock Hall and a team of expert Clinical Nurse Specialists who care for people at home or in community clinics.
It costs £5 million to run St Catherine's each year - of which a huge £3.7m must be raised through charitable efforts with the support of the local community.
Senior fundraiser Lynne Whittaker said: "We simply could not generate the funds we need each year without the support of businesses like Redrow.
"We are extremely grateful to them for picking us as one of their chosen charities during their milestone 40th year. Now, as we mark our own special 30th anniversary during 2015, we are delighted to receive these valuable funds and to hear of more exciting events the firm has planned for the future.
"The money raised will help us to be there for local people when it really matters most."
Redrow’s charity challenge harnessed the enthusiasm and support of its employees throughout 2014. But the support didn’t stop with fundraising activities, as St Catherine’s Hospice discovered.
Together with various sub-contractors and suppliers, Redrow helped to build an extension to The Woodside lymphoedema clinic at the hospice last year, providing labour, materials and covering the VAT bill and other costs.
Steve Greenhalgh, managing director for Redrow Homes (Lancashire), added: “The Redrow team has been absolutely fantastic – they’ve really thrown themselves into raising money for St Catherine’s Hospice and other good causes and the amount they’ve raised is staggering.”
The Lancashire division’s efforts for the year resulted in a massive £80,000 total being raised for good causes such as Alzheimer’s Society, Derian House children’s hospice, Stroke Association and Macmillan.
