Liverpool buyers skip rungs on the ladder
The couple, both 34, had been looking at older homes in Liverpool but fell in love with the showhome at Redrow’s Calderstones Grange development and all of its traditional exterior features.
Rachel said: “We had always been keen on older properties because of their character but when we saw the homes in Redrow’s Heritage Collection, we realised we could actually get all of those features in a new property too. With a new build we also had the bonus of modern features inside and barely any work to do when we moved in.
“We weren’t sure if we’d be able to afford such a large home this soon but when we spoke to the independent financial advisor we found out we could use the Help to Buy scheme and it was possible to purchase a lifetime home much quicker than we thought.”
The government scheme, which uses a 20% equity loan, interest free for five years, can reduce the initial purchase price by tens of thousands of pounds and also allows the buyers to use a typical deposit of just 5%.
Rachel and Martin, both pharmacists, plumped for the four-bedroom detached Richmond housetype after going to see a showhome in the style at a different development.
“We really liked the look of it,” Rachel explained. “The coving, the staircase, the bay window; it was everything we wanted in a family home but it had all the benefits of being a new property with contemporary touches and a warranty too.
“We hadn’t known much about Help to Buy beforehand but it’s certainly enabled us to progress much more quickly than we would have done if we’d gone for an older property. We feel very lucky as it’s such a lovely development and a great area of Liverpool.
“It was an incredibly smooth process, everyone was really helpful and you know you’ve done ok when the most difficult part of moving is choosing the new curtains! We definitely see this as our forever home,” she added.
