Best paw forward: Bears teach children about building site safety
Farndon school children have been learning how to stay safe near building sites with a little help from a housebuilder’s furry friends.
Redrow Homes’ health and safety mascot Buster Bear and his keen apprentice Buddy visited Farndon Primary School, in Cheshire, to spread their important message to nearly 200 pupils aged from four up to six.
As part of the talk, children learnt all about the various items of protective clothing worn on a building site, including high visibility jackets, safety gloves and hard hats. They were also able to pose for photos with the popular bears.
Farndon Primary School’s headteacher Andy Walker said: “The children really enjoyed meeting Buster and Buddy and learning all about safety on building sites. It was an important message as the children go past the development frequently and building sites can look very appealing to children with diggers and other things that might be tempting to climb on. But they now know that such sites are out of bounds and that they can be dangerous.”
Buster and Buddy were joined by Redrow’s health and safety manager Charlotte Weston, site manager Tim Hotchkiss and sales consultant Anita Gillespie.
Charlotte Weston added: “Redrow is committed to the communities in which we build and, because the school is so close to our new homes being built in Farndon, it was great to be given the opportunity to talk to the pupils and raise awareness of the potential dangers that construction sites can pose and, most importantly, how to stay safe. Buster and Buddy love visiting local schools and hope to do more of this work.”
The important safety lesson coincided with building work accelerating at Redrow’s development of four-bedroom family homes. Farndon Meadow, is located on Sibbersfield Lane and homes currently available include the ‘Welwyn’, complete with integral double garage, and the ‘Henley’, with its 36ft long family, dining and kitchen area and generously-sized bedrooms.
Being close to the Welsh border, Farndon is within easy reach of both Chester and Wrexham. The development is just four miles from the A41, with the M53, A55 and M6 making Manchester or Liverpool easily commutable.
