Redrow gives community centre a cracking Christmas gift
REDROW has helped to spread the festive joy after sponsoring two Christmas events at a Wigan community centre.
The builder forked out funds so the popular Beehive Centre in Mosley Common, close to its Bridgewater View development, could welcome more than 60 people to a community Christmas lunch and around 90 children for a Christmas disco.
Mavis Grundy who, with part-time teacher Louise Cook, saved the centre from closure around 15 months ago, said: “It’s great. It’s been hard work keeping the centre going and getting lots of activities for the people in the community to enjoy, but really rewarding too.
“It means a lot when companies like Redrow support us and help out, because it means we can offer so much more – or put on events that we know people will love. That’s great to see.
“We want to provide a place that people can come to and be part of a community again, where people will look out for one another and where they can have fun. The support from Redrow means we can do just that, and have done that, at a very special time of year.”
The Beehive Centre welcomed 63 people to the Christmas Lunch where they were treated to mulled wine and sat down to a three-course meal, followed by mince pies, chocolates – and entertainment.
At the disco, the centre brought in a DJ to host the evening and ‘gave the kids a Christmas night to remember’.
The events were among many organised by the centre in Lindale Road which offers a range of groups and activities every day from early morning until 9pm; as well as opening up a café on Thursdays and Fridays – which also takes meals out to people unable to get to it – and renting out a room for hire. It also holds special events like 60s nights, Lancashire evenings and race nights.
It is busier than it has ever been, in spite of facing closure before Mavis, 75, a retired nursery nurse and social services manager, and Louise put together a business proposal to keep it going.
“We just knew it had such potential,” added Mavis. “Wigan Council agreed to pay the gas and electricity for 12 months and we have relied on donations, grants and fund-raising to get new furniture, blinds and update the place. It’s looking good: the next thing we need to sort is the heating but the centre is going from strength to strength, thanks to the people who come and those who support us and volunteer for us.”
Lesley Myers, sales manager for Redrow Homes (Lancashire), applauded Mavis, Louise and their band of volunteers on their hard work and efforts to keep the community centre going: “They have done an amazing job and all credit to them. We at Redrow always like to support the communities in which we build, and never more so than when we are offering a helping hand to people who are already doing so much themselves and the rewards are already being seen and felt by those within them.
“The Centre is a hive of activity and a go-to place for children, young mums and dads, and older people. It’s a special place and we are delighted to have helped them spread the cheer this Christmas.”
