School gets ‘clucky’ with donation for chicken coop

28th September 2021
Redrow - News - North West - Bramhall Primary School Donation

Pupils at a Bramhall primary school are learning about responsibility and gaining a greater sense of community after installing a chicken coop with money donated by us.

Through our community fund, connected to nearby Woodford Garden Village, Queensgate Primary School received a £2,250 donation to enable them to purchase a chicken coop and pay for its running costs for the first year.

Headteacher, Nerys Hitchcock, says the benefits of having the chickens at the school are already being seen: “It’s great that we now have the opportunity to provide the children with an outlet to express their nurturing side, gain an understanding of life cycles and to take on some responsibility for looking after animals.

“But the benefits also expand outside of the school. We will soon be able to sell the eggs to the local community, as well as using them for baking biscuits and cakes to donate to community events. We are also asking families to help care for the chickens over school holidays to further embed that sense of responsibility.”

The school purchased six hens and each class has named a hen. The classes take it in turns to be responsible for feeding and cleaning the hens.

Nerys adds: “We have lots of budding Dr Doolittle's who intuitively care for the hens. It has been a great success.”

Simon Bennett, interim sales director for the North West said: “As a housebuilder we are very dedicated to local communities close to where we build homes. Supporting the school with this great project that will give back to the community ties in perfectly with what we do and it’s lovely to see the children enjoying their new friends.”

Through the community fund, we’ve shared £10,000 between eight local groups.
