Dunstable school receives a ‘farm-tastic’ donation

20th July 2021
Redrow - News - South Midlands - Weatherfield School Donation

The South Midlands division, which is currently building new homes at Caddington Woods, on Chaul End, has presented Weatherfield Academy with a donation of £1,000 as part of our community fund initiative.

The funds will go towards renovations for the school’s small farm and horticultural area. This includes replacing the 30-year-old wooden structure that houses the farm’s hens, ducks, and geese, providing an easy-to-clean framework and a safer environment for the animals.

The farm enables pupils with a recognised cognition and learning delay to develop vocational and social skills that they can continue to use in future employment opportunities. The space was also regularly used by the local community at weekends and maintained by a group of volunteers prior to the pandemic.

Suzanne Irons, Sales Director for the South Midlands, said: “We are delighted to be supporting Weatherfield Academy and their farm, which has been loved by pupils and staff for decades.

“Over the last year, schools across the country have had to use existing budgets to cover COVID costs. This has inevitably put a strain on existing school resources that in some cases need desperately updating. We’re proud to contribute to the farm and horticultural area and look forward to hearing how the pupils, staff and animals enjoy their updated space.”

Joe Selmes, Headteacher at Weatherfield Academy, said: “The farm has been a staple feature here at Weatherfield Academy for the last thirty years. This generous donation from Redrow will ensure it continues to be a loved and valued resource which will be imbedded into our curriculum and practice for many years to come. Thank you Redrow South Midlands!”
