Pedestrians put their best foot forward as £1 million footbridge comes to Halling
The two metre wide metal footbridge, the construction of which was overseen by Steven Clarke of Breheny Civil Engineering, was craned into place in summer 2017. The bridge safely links the public right of way that passes through St Andrews Park, where Redrow is delivering new homes, to the wider local community in Halling. Redrow has worked closely with Medway Council in the design, construction and installation of the bridge.
Alongside the new bridge Redrow has put in a toucan crossing for both pedestrians and cyclists, widened the footpaths on either side of the carriageway and the speed limit has reduced from 60 mph to 40 mph. The 16 school council representatives, pupils from Halling Primary School, who attended the ribbon cutting ceremony also received a road safety talk from Highway Officers at Medway Council.
Darren Banks, Engineering Co-ordinator at Redrow South East, commented: “The succession of measures that we have put in place along the A228 as a result of the St Andrews Park development has significantly improved the safety of the road. The footbridge is a central component of that and it’s fantastic that we have been able to open it today with pupils from Halling Primary School and representatives of Medway Council who we worked so closely with in the design and installation of the bridge.”
Councillor Matt Fearn, Ward Member for Cuxton and Halling at Medway Council, commented: “I very much welcome the commitment to safety of both Medway Council and Redrow in delivering this new footbridge that will be a great benefit to the local community. It was a project that I fully supported from its concept and I have taken a close interest in it throughout the construction phase.
“The footbridge now allows the local residents to cross the busy A228 in total safety as it links the St Andrews Park development and lower Halling. I would like to thank Redrow on behalf of all residents for demonstrating their commitment to safety and ensuring the footpath project was completed.”
