Redrow apprentices use reclaimed wood to build outdoor learning facilities for local primary school
Five carpentry apprentices at Redrow’s flagship development, Ebbsfleet Green, have built two outdoor learning facilities for neighbouring Cherry Orchard Primary Academy. The new buildings, made entirely of recycled wood from the housebuilders construction work, are the product of two days of labour carried out by the aspiring apprentices.
Cherry Orchard Primary Academy will be using the new buildings to provide an outdoor learning environment for their pupils to develop their reading and writing skills in a relaxed setting. The onsite apprentices, currently enrolled at MidKent College, worked hard to ensure the facilities were safe, comfortable and fit for learning.
Andy Pearson, Site Manager at Redrow South East, commented: “This was a great project, as it enabled us to use leftover wood from construction, gave our apprentices vital practical knowledge, and provided Cherry Orchard Primary Academy with tailor-made learning facilities. At Redrow we place a strong emphasis on valuing people, and this donation will provide pupils and staff at the school with a fun learning environment.”
Victoria Sherress, the Reception Teacher at Cherry Orchard Primary school, commented: “Outdoor learning is a fundamental part of the curriculum in Early Years and at Cherry Orchard we are always looking for ways to extend the variety of opportunities and resources available to our youngest children. We are extremely grateful to everyone involved in this project, particularly the apprentices of course, who have provided us with a storage solution that is practical, secure and most importantly can be independently accessed by the children allowing them to lead their own learning. I would like to say a big thank you on behalf of all of the staff and children.”
Newly built Cherry Orchard Primary Academy opened in Kent’s Ebbsfleet Valley in September 2017. The school provided local children with new state of the art facilities. The school is part of the Leigh Academies Trust, one of the nation’s most successful, medium-sized, multi-academy trusts.
