Redrow delivers a lesson in nature for Staplehurst School pupils
Year five pupils from Staplehurst School visited Redrow’s nature-rich Woodlands Green development for a wildlife awareness session ahead of bonfire night. The interactive session led by the onsite team and ecologists, Corylus Ecology, was an opportunity to educate the nine and ten year olds on the importance of checking bonfires for hedgehogs.
The talk also provided the pupils with an overview of the wildlife that can be found on site at Woodlands Green, and the young explorers had an opportunity to head out on site to view the ecology features and look for wildlife.
We are committed to creating safe environments for wildlife to live and flourish alongside residents. We are adopting an innovative ‘net gain’ approach to biodiversity across its developments, measuring ecological value prior to and after the creation of new homes. At Woodlands Green we are incorporating hedgehog highways into the new gardens, ensuring that the small mammals are able to safely travel through the new community to find places to forage and rest. We donated four hedgehog hotels to Staplehurst School, so the pupils can create safe spaces for hedgehogs to hibernate this winter.
Darren Banks, Senior Engineering Coordinator at Redrow South East, commented: “It was a fantastic morning out on site with the pupils, they were all really interested in the wildlife and it was great to see their enthusiasm. At Redrow we are committed to ensuring our wildlife is safeguarded and place a priority in creating new habitats for them to thrive. Heading out onto site is a great way of showing youngsters how wildlife can flourish in the right environment.”
Jack Tate, teacher at Staplehurst School said, "The children had a fantastic morning on the Redrow site, learning about the local wildlife and what they can do to protect the amazing creatures living in our fields, hedgerows and own back gardens. They were all interested to learn about what Redrow do to protect the onsite ecology, find out about the species living in the area, and were excited to place several hedgehog shelters, playing their part in creating a safe haven for these animals. It was a lovely opportunity for the children to be invited out into the local community and to meet the Redrow team, who I have no doubt inspired a number of young ecologists amongst our pupils."
We currently have a selection of two, three, four and five bedroom family homes available at Woodlands Green, with prices starting from £349,995. From our award-wining Heritage collection, the homes combine traditional architecture and craftsmanship with spacious modern interiors.
