Cardiff pupils help to design local sculpture trail

16th March 2022
Redrow - News - David Mackie Schools Partnership

120 pupils from Corpus Christi Catholic High School and Llysfaen Primary School in Cardiff have been working with artist David Mackie to develop a public art programme that celebrates the diversity of their local wildlife.

Using biodiversity as the theme, the pupils have created a series of designs for a new sculpture trail that will surround our new homes at Churchlands in Lisvane, Cardiff. Due to be constructed in Autumn 2022, the trail through public open spaces will include a combination of sculptures, seating, and signage as well as railings, bollards and lighting.

David Mackie said: “Noticing the everyday nature close to home and feeling an emotional connection to our natural surroundings brings a range of benefits. It helps with our own well-being and also in protecting our environment and its biodiversity.

“Redrow take great pride in building homes around nature to help create a better way to live; locating art within a public space that adds value to a development and enhances the sense of place for all users. The designs by local pupils will now be used to develop an inspirational and educational sculpture trail that will help to give the Churchlands development its own identity.”

Vicky Monkley is head of art at Corpus Christi Catholic High School. She said: “Our pupils have really enjoyed this project. It’s helped them to engage with biodiversity and contribute to the local community in a meaningful way that encourages them to connect with wildlife. They are all looking forward to seeing their ideas come to life.”

Reuben Cooke is our technical manager in South Wales. He said: “Designing dedicated spaces for nature to thrive and for people to experience and learn is critical to us. That’s why we go above and beyond to retain and enhance the natural environments around our developments like here at Churchlands. It’s all part of how we create a better way to live by developing thriving communities, building responsibly and valuing people.

“We’re delighted with the creative and imaginative designs that the pupils have created as part of their work with David and look forward to introducing their ideas over the coming months.”
