Redrow Apprentice Job Swap
A Redrow South West plumbing apprentice completed a job swap with regional managing director Lee Hawker as part of a national challenge to raise the profile of apprenticeships.
Jacob Leworthy is competing in the Brathay Apprentice Challenge 2017 alongside eight fellow trainees from the Redrow South West team who are hoping to win the title of ‘Apprentice Team of the Year’ by proving they have the best team building, logistical, leadership and community skills in the UK.
As part of the challenge, the 18-year-old from Kingswood spent a morning in Lee’s shoes, taking part in a directors’ meeting at Redrow’s new development Abode Bedminster, which covered site costings, updates on various projects and ideas to solve current on-site issues.
Former Grange School student Jacob, who joined Redrow South West as a plumbing apprentice in 2015, said: “It was great to be introduced to and interact with colleagues much more senior than myself. The main take away I had from the swap was increased confidence with communications.
“As a plumbing apprentice, I spend most of my time doing practical work, therefore this experience has given me an insight into the bigger picture of operations at Redrow South West.”
Lee Hawker, managing director of Redrow South West, said: “Jacob did a great job of taking my role for a morning. He shared some great ideas and useful thoughts on issues that were raised at the meeting.
“As a youngster who works on site all the time he can offer some really useful insight. All our apprentices at Redrow South West are really hard working and deserve every success in the Brathay Apprentice Challenge.”
The Brathay Apprentice Challenge is organised by the Brathay Trust and supported by the National Apprenticeship Service.
For the regional heats, the Redrow South West team has completed a number of community initiatives as well as giving talks on apprenticeships within local schools and colleges.
The top two teams from each region - North, Central, London and South East, South West - will battle it out to be crowned the apprentice team of the year.
The national finalists will be announced at an event in London in May. The competition culminates in a logistical and teambuilding finale at the Brathay Trust's Windermere headquarters in June.
