DOUBLE AWARDS SUCCESS FOR WICKERSLEY SITE MANAGER
And it's a philosophy which is certainly paying off – for Tony and his employer.
Tony, 52, from Rotherham, who heads up the workforce at Hall Croft, Wickersley, has just received a commendation in the 2016 NHBC Health and Safety Awards – and will now go forward to the national finals in Birmingham on July 8.
And, if that wasn't enough reason to celebrate, he has also been named one of 24 Redrow site managers to be awarded the NHBC's Pride in the Job ‘Quality’ award too.
It means double celebrations for Tony who admits: “It really does make you feel quite good. In fact, it's a fantastic feeling.
“It means I have done my job well and that is always what I aim to do. I never set out to have a normal site, an ordinary one, I wanted a brilliant one. I expect a lot from my team but that leads to respect and understanding all round. All my contractors and site team have bought into my vision of what I am trying to achieve, safety, high quality and professional site presentation.”
As well as the national finals of the Health and Safety Awards next month, Tony will also go forward to compete in the next level of the Pride in the Job awards this autumn, when he’ll be
hoping to collect a ‘Seal of Excellence’.
The NHBC Health and Safety Awards are the UK's only health and safety awards aimed solely at home builders and are designed to recognise the very best in that area, and help drive up standards in the industry by showcasing and sharing best practice.
A record 61 first round winners, including five Redrow developments and their site managers, are through to the finals when they’ll discover if they’ve won a higher award – highly commended, national runner-up and overall winner.
Among them is Tony, who says: “I am hopeful for us. During a Redrow health and safety check our site got a score of 100% which meant that not one thing was out of place or unsafe – that really was very special and a credit to everyone on site – and I think Redrow's own health and safety manager David Bunyard said he had never known it before either.”
Tony began his career in the building industry as a fork lift truck driver before becoming assistant site manager with another company. He has been with Redrow for the last 12 years, again working his way up, and has been site manager for four years.
He has taken over various developments before now, but this is the first site Tony has taken charge of from the beginning. And he says: “As a person I take pride in everything I do and I do the same in my job. I'm very proud to work for Redrow and I believe I provide a very good working environment for everyone on the site.
“It can be hard sometimes to say 'this is what I want' and 'this is what we expect' but this is a professional company and so I want to promote a professional approach to everything. I want to ensure consistency across the board. I treat my team and contractors with respect and I expect the same in return.”
Highlighting excellence in the field for 35 years, Pride in the Job is dedicated to recognising site managers who achieve the highest standards in housebuilding. Around 15,000 site managers undergo the judging process in small, medium, large and specialist housebuilder categories and Tony is one of only 430 to receive a Quality award.
Judging began 12 months ago and includes spot checks of the day-to-day running of sites, plus assessment across 38 areas of site management, including each manager’s technical knowledge, consistency in the build process, leadership and organisational skills.
Darren Draycott, head of construction for Redrow Homes (Yorkshire), said: “Redrow takes pride in building better homes so people can enjoy better lives. But it starts when we start building and with people like Tony. The pride he takes in his work means that we can offer people beautiful homes they can be proud of, from a company they can trust. We wish Tony and others within Redrow the very best in the next phases of these awards.”
