Redrow gives Morley pupils a 'wheelie' good day!
To mark the fact the final day of the Tour passed within three miles of Morley, on route from Bradford to Sheffield, Redrow Homes treated 120 pupils at Morley Newlands Academy to a day of cycling related activities.
Redrow paid for local ‘Bikeability’ cycle training company CycleLeeds to provide a range of workshops for year four and five pupils, including a bike fix challenge and Cyclo-cross obstacle course.
All bikes and equipment were provided and, for those unable to ride a bike, Cycle Leeds provided additional Learn to Ride sessions.
Redrow area sales manager Sam Brackenbury and marketing coordinator Rebecca went along to encourage pupils to get on their bikes.
Simon McCarthy, principal of Morley Newlands Academy said, said: “The Tour de Yorkshire is a great event which puts this region on the cycling map and attracts a lot of interest. This special day gave our pupils an opportunity to engage with the event in a very practical way and to increase their skills and confidence on a bike. We’re very grateful to Redrow for making it possible.”
Class teachers were given the option to adapt other lessons through the day, eg. maths, geography, science and art, to reflect the cycling and Tour de Yorkshire theme.
Sam Brackenbury, for Redrow, said: “Our Weavers’ Chase development, off Albert Road, has recently launched and our new show home has opened. The development features primarily family homes and this seemed like a great way to support and engage with one of the local schools that children living at Weavers’ Chase are likely to attend.
“Now in its third year, the whole region gets behind LeTour and the pupils at Morley Newlands Academy were certainly captivated by the cycling activities. Hopefully some of them were lucky enough to see the professional riders when they cycled through nearby Birstall on Sunday.”
