Redrow's Yorkshire MD eyes further growth
His remit includes growing Redrow’s presence throughout Yorkshire; and continuing the company’s focus on creating outstanding places for people to live, in homes that they can enjoy and be proud of for many years to come.
The Yorkshire business currently delivers circa 500 new homes annually and has been chosen to deliver up to 300 new homes at Thorpe Park, in East Leeds, a joint venture between Scarborough Group International and Legal & General Capital.
James, 44, transferred from the company’s Midlands’ division late last year. He had previously joined Redrow from Countrywide plc, where latterly he was group residential development director, overseeing its planning, land, consultancy, new homes sales and investment arms in the new homes sector both in the UK and Hong Kong. His arrival at Redrow signalled a return to the housebuilder sector, having previously spent almost three years as a sales director for David Wilson Homes and more latterly Barratt Developments.
“I originally joined Countrywide in 2010 to be managing director of their Land and New Homes business. As a non-estate agent, I was specifically recruited for my developer background so that I could use my knowledge, skills and experience to grow and enhance the company’s offering to housebuilders,” James explained.
“After six years building that business and overseeing a number of acquisitions and restructures, I was keen to return to an in-house position within the new homes sector and, through my experience of dealing with just about every one of the country’s housebuilders, I very quickly identified Redrow as the place I’d like to be. They have an outstanding management team – still led by the business founder Steve Morgan – an excellent culture and a product that is second to none. Their homes are simply stunning.”
Whilst initially joining Redrow in the Midlands, James’ knowledge and experience of the Yorkshire area made him the ideal candidate for the Wakefield based position, especially as he was already living in South Yorkshire; and, unsurprisingly for someone who has also worked extensively in the retail and financial services sectors, including nine years with Marks & Spencer and then director of new build financial services at Mortgage Talk, James is focused on developing people within the business and providing first class customer service.
“It’s not enough to score highly for customer referrals; I want every customer to feel special and valued,” he said. “I also want our developments to be award winning, especially in schemes like the NHBC Pride in the Job – where last year Tony Stanley won a ‘Quality’ award and a ‘Seal of Excellence’ for Redrow Yorkshire’s Hall Croft development, in Rotherham; and to harness and develop the talent we have already within the business while, at the same time, recognising and bringing through new talent to create an even stronger team.”
James’ predecessor in the Yorkshire MD role, Warren Thompson – now promoted to Redrow’s regional chief executive for the North of the country - said: “It’s great to have someone of James’ calibre on board. His wider experience outside the new homes sector is an asset but, at the same time, he has a broad knowledge and experience of sales, land and planning right across the new homes market, encompassing all of the major developers and the whole of the UK.”
