As is often the case in villages like Winscombe, the best dining locations are to be found in old country pubs and inns. The Woodborough Inn in the village and the Sidcot Arms, a Brewers Fayre pub, are both well worth a visit locally, as are The New Inn at Cross, The Railway Inn at Sandford and The Bath Arms in Cheddar.

Winscombe also has a choice of charming tearooms, including the Pantry Café and Charlottes, with plenty more to be found in the nearby villages.

With an eye firmly on the tourist trade, Cheddar has an excellent choice of eateries within easy reach of Winscombe, including Lao Thai, Edelweiss, Franks and Café George.

For a great family day out, head for the coast at Weston Super Mare, just 8 miles away, or the caves at Cheddar Gorge and Wookey Hole, which are even closer. The mysterious history of Glastonbury is well worth investigating, as is the famous music festival held there each year.

For evening entertainment, the Roxy community cinema in Axbridge offers a unique experience, while Weston provides more mainstream films at its Odeon and Cineworld multiplexes.

There is a small selection of shops in the village, including The Wine Shop, which holds regular tasting evenings. For a wider selection, head for Weston Super Mare, where you’ll find the Sovereign Shopping Centre and Gallagher Retail Park.

For a touch of true retail therapy, even the most hardened shopaholic couldn’t ask for more than Bristol, with endless shopping malls and arcades in the central Shopping Quarter, including the famous Cabot’s Circus.
