Does low boiler pressure affect hot water?

If your boiler isn’t firing properly or is functioning at a low pressure, this can cause your entire home heating and hot water system to malfunction. If you notice that the radiators aren’t working properly or notice cold patches, it might mean that the system pressure needs checking.

What is normal boiler pressure?

The standard reading for your heating system should be 1.5 bar. If the dial is below that, it’s time to re-pressurise the system.

Luckily, this is a simple procedure for you to do. We’ve outlined the steps below, and you can also watch the video guide above to see exactly what to do to fix your hot water.

Step 1

Unscrew the cap at the filling points (labelled 4 and 8 in the video). Keep a towel on hand to soak up any water that might spill out.

Step 2

You’ll find a flexible loop (the filling loop) located close to the boiler system. Connect this to the pipes you’ve just uncapped.

Step 3

Open the valves at the filling points (4 and 8 in the video).

Step 4

Have a look at the dial and wait until the pressure reads 1.5 bar.

Step 5

Once the pressure is at the correct level, close the valves at each end of the boiler. Take off the filling loop again, keeping the towel handy to catch any spillage. Replace the caps to finish the process.

After re-pressurising, radiators should begin working correctly and evenly heating.

If you have problems again later down the line, it’s worth trying the above process again before getting in touch with an engineer.
