Check out our guide below, or watch our quick video to see how to change lightbulbs in your home.
How to change an internal lightbulb
To change a downlight fitted by Redrow, the process is super simple. You’ll just need a stepladder and the correct replacement bulb. Make sure to turn off the power to any light fixtures you’re working on - switch them off in your consumer unit (fuse box). Make sure to double check you’ve turned the right ones off before you start working on them.
Position your ladder under the fixture so you can reach up comfortably. You’ll need to take off the clip that holds the bulb in - pinch both ends of the clip together to remove it. Make sure to keep this in a safe place while you replace the bulb.
Once the clip is off, the bulb and cable should hang down below the ceiling. Unscrew the bulb (turning anti-clockwise), and replace it with a new one. Once it’s screwed in, put the bulb back into the space in the ceiling, and replace the spring clip. You’ll need to pinch the ends together to put it in, and then let go once it’s in the right place.
Once everything is back in place, you can turn the power back on via the consumer unit. Test that the light works.
How to change an external bulb
Depending on the style of your Redrow home, you may have outdoor lights too. Exterior lights come in a range of styles across our range of homes, but the most common type we use is a traditional lantern style.
You’ll need to follow a similar process to your interior lights to change a bulb. Head to the consumer unit and make sure to switch off the outside lights. You’ll then be able to double check it’s off by testing the switch.
To change the bulb, loosen the screws on top of the light. Keep one hand on the actual lantern part of the light during this process so it doesn’t fall or get damaged. Carefully remove the lantern casing and set this aside.
Gently pull down on the bulb to remove it, then push a new one back into place. Pop the casing back on, and carefully re-screw the top back securely.
Flick the switch back on at your consumer unit and head back outside to check your handiwork!
