How to look after your bathroom extractor fan

Your bathroom, a sanctuary for relaxation, often hides a silent enemy, moisture. Every steamy shower and warm bath contributes to a buildup of condensation, creating the perfect breeding ground for mold, mildew, and unpleasant odors. This isn't just a cosmetic issue; unchecked moisture can lead to significant damage to your bathroom's surfaces and even impact your health.

That's where your bathroom extractor fan comes in. Far more than just a whirring appliance, it's a crucial guardian, diligently working to whisk away excess humidity and keep your bathroom fresh, dry, and healthy. In this guide, we'll show you how to give this essential component the care it deserves, ensuring it continues to protect your bathroom for years to come.

What is a bathroom extractor fan for?

Extractor fans are vital for helping to remove water vapour from the air in the bathroom. This is important to keep the environment clean and free from condensation, dampness and mould. Cleaning the extractor fan is an essential part of your bathroom cleaning routine and can help prevent dust and dirt from stopping it from working.

How to clean a bathroom extractor fan

Start by making sure the switch for the fan itself is turned off. In most Redrow house types, you’ll find the mains switch above the door for the bathroom, on the outside wall.

Once you’ve turned the power to the extractor fan off, you can use a vacuum cleaner hose to clean the fan grill and blade. You might need to wipe it with a clean cloth to fully remove all the dust.

What to do if water drips from the extractor fan

If you see water dripping from the extractor fan, this isn’t necessarily cause for alarm. This is most likely caused by condensation from using the bathroom. You can reduce the build-up of condensation by opening the bathroom windows when you’re using the bath or shower. We also recommend leaving the trickle vents on top of the windows in the open position.

If you do see more than the occasional drop of water fall from your extractor fan, or you need any further assistance, a member of the Redrow team would be happy to help.
