Because your home is newly built, cracks may appear as moisture escapes through the walls, and they settle. You may notice small cracks on internal walls for the first 18 months after building.

Luckily, they’re nothing to worry about, and are also easy to repair. Follow our steps below or watch our video below to get your home looking as good as new in no time.

What should I use to repair internal cracks?

You can use decorator’s caulk to easily repair small cracks in internal walls. Caulk is a flexible filler available from your usual DIY store or decorating shop, and you can use it on a range of surfaces. You’ll also need a skeleton gun or caulking gun to achieve a seamless finish.

How to repair cracks in internal walls

Step 1

Start by preparing your caulk. Take off the cap and make a careful incision at the top of the tupe with a sharp knife or blade. You can then replace the cap and make a cut at the top - cut it at an angle, and make sure to cut a hole the correct size for the hole you’re filling.

Step 2

Arrange dust sheets or other cloths around the work area, making sure to protect anything that might get messy - e.g. furniture and carpets. Prepare the area around the crack by brushing away any dust with a cloth.

Step 3

Pull the central bar out of your skeleton gun to fit the tube of caulk inside. Once it’s fitted, squeeze the gun’s trigger until you can see caulk starting to come through.

To apply caulking to the wall, keep even pressure on the trigger as you run the skeleton gun along the surface of the crack. The more even the coverage you can apply, the smoother the crack will look.

Use your finger to smooth the caulk down, and then follow it with a damp cloth to smoothen the surface.

Step 4

Leave the caulk to dry for at least a day. You can then apply paint or redecorate once it’s dry.

This easy repair can transform the look and feel of your space.
