Hopefully you’ll never need to turn off the water supply, but unfortunately sometimes accidents and emergencies do happen. It’s always best to be prepared for every eventuality, so it’s a good idea to know where and how to turn off your water supply should you ever need to.

We’ve put together a quick guide to locating and switching off the supply, and you can also watch a video to see the steps in action.

Turning off your water supply

In your new Redrow home, you’ll be able to find the water stop tap underneath the sink. To turn the water off, simply rotate the tap in a clockwise direction as much as possible.

You can check that you’ve turned the supply off by trying to run the kitchen tap. There might be a bit of residual water until the pipe has emptied, but the flow should stop quickly if the main supply is off.

Turning your water back on

Turning the water supply back on is just as simple as turning it off. Turn the tap anti-clockwise all the way, and then give it a slight twist clockwise. This can help stop the tap from getting stuck, just in case you need to turn it off in a hurry next time.

How to turn off the water supply to the entire house

You can also switch off the supply to the whole house through the water meter, usually outside the front of the home. You’ll find it under a metal plate marked ‘water’ - these are often located within the garden or outside on a footpath.

After you’ve found your meter, you can open the lid using a flat head screwdriver. Take off the polystyrene cover and set this aside. Reach into the meter and turn the key inside in a clockwise direction.

That should stop the overall supply of water to the house, but make sure to check by running a tap inside.
