Painting your new home

Undoubtedly one of the main perks of moving into a new house is being able to decorate a blank canvas, and not having to deal with any questionable decorating by the previous owners. It's only natural to want to personalise your new home according to your own taste. Fortunately, it’s easy to do just that.

As soon as you’ve unpacked your boxes, have your furniture in place and start to live in your new property, it will feel like home before you know it. Arranging all those bits and bobs you’ve accumulated over the years is exactly what will give your new home some personality.

Can I paint a new build?

While painting is a popular option for decorating any space, we advise against grabbing your brushes right away when it comes to new properties. Newly constructed homes tend to have a significant amount of moisture trapped in the walls due to the recent building process.

Making sure all the moisture has naturally escaped from the walls can be a time-consuming process. Therefore, it is recommended to wait at least 18 months to two years before painting. Painting too soon, while the moisture is still present, can lead to damage. On the plus side, this waiting period gives you more time to settle into your new home and really give your decorations some thought.

How can I match the existing décor?

In your new Redrow home, you’ll find the walls are painted in a light and radiant shade called Almond White, which can be easily matched if you ever need to touch up, patch, or repaint. However, it's crucial to wait until your home has been built for at least 18 months before doing any painting to avoid introducing additional moisture to the walls.

When the time comes for painting, keep an eye out for Dulux Almond White Supermatte Emulsion. This is the exact paint colour already used on your walls. It's worth noting that the trade version of this shade, which is used throughout your home, is slightly lighter than the consumer version available from the same brand. If you wish to achieve an exact colour match, you can have the trade colour mixed at your nearest Dulux decorating centre.

Whichever approach you choose to decorate your new home, make sure that your new décor reflects your personal style while ensuring the preservation of your beautiful new space.
