As the temperature drops and winter approaches, the risk of freezing water becomes more of a concern for your pipes. Outdoor taps are particularly susceptible to freezing, meaning it’s essential to give them extra care during the colder months.

Follow the steps below to get ready for winter, or watch our quick video guide.

When should I turn off my outdoor tap?

The most significant risk arises during the coldest months of the year when the water inside pipes freezes, expands, and creates pressure, potentially resulting in damage. However, it is crucial to be proactive and prepared even before the arrival of extreme cold weather. Start the process in the autumn, just as the weather begins to turn colder, by isolating the water supply to the outdoor tap.

How do I turn off my outdoor tap?

The first step is to isolate the water in your outdoor tap. To do this, look in the cupboard beneath your kitchen sink, where you’ll find a valve which connects your outdoor tap to the water supply. Turn this to the ‘off’ position.

After isolating the water in the tap, head outside. With the water supply to the tap turned off, turn on the tap itself to release any remaining water and fully empty the pipe. It’s best to have a bucket or a watering can handy to collect the water and prevent getting your feet wet! By ensuring that the tap is completely empty, you minimise the risk of freezing when temperatures drop.

Should I invest in a tap cover for winter?

For optimal protection against winter frosts, we recommend covering your outdoor tap. There are several options available, such as insulated bags or shell covers, which can be easily obtained from your local DIY shop. Follow the instructions provided with the cover and securely fit it over your outdoor tap. By taking this measure, both your outdoor tap and interior pipes will be safeguarded until the arrival of spring.
