How we integrate green spaces into our developments

Redrow communities aren’t just places for new homes. They’re communities created to enhance nature and help our residents live healthier, greener lives.

Integrating green spaces within our developments is central to our philosophy, enhancing the well-being of the people who live there and fostering a deeper connection with nature. It’s all part of our promise to build better places to live, with sustainably built homes created with nature in mind.

So, how do we make sure our developments have their own green spaces, and why is that so important to us?

Why green spaces are important

Green spaces do more than make a place look beautiful – they help people feel better too. Whether it’s a walk through tree-lined paths, children playing on a village green, cycling through nature-rich spaces, or simply enjoying your garden on a summer evening, time spent outdoors has proven benefits for both mental and physical health.

Living close to nature can lower stress, improve mood, and encourage more active lifestyles. It also builds stronger communities, giving neighbours natural places to meet, relax and connect. That’s why we carefully design all of our Redrow developments to incorporate accessible green spaces.

We believe that a great home should come with the freedom to enjoy the outdoors, every day.

How we integrate our developments with green spaces

A lot of thought goes into the creation and planning of every development we open. Location is of course important - we want to build homes where people need them - but we also think carefully about quality of life. So we make sure our homes are nearby to all the amenities you’ll need, but we also build outdoor space into every single community.

Here's how we achieve this:

Our Garden Villages

One of the most obvious ways we include green spaces is through our Garden Villages. These are larger new communities where we have the opportunity to deliver a network of multi-functional green spaces and corridors which incorporate walking and cycling routes as well as natural play areas.

That might take the form of orchards and allotments to encourage community connection and wildlife. Or, it might be through scenic cycle routes or sports pitches to help residents get outside more. Redrow Garden Villages are always within easy access of nearby towns and cities, while still prioritising clean air and countryside.

Building for biodiversity

We prioritise the inclusion of lawns, grassy banks, paths and other green spaces to make our developments look nice, of course, but there are plenty more benefits of living close to nature.

New trees and pollinator-friendly planting are a key part of our new development designs, which as well as enhancing air quality also offer shade, vital for our paths and community greens.

Promoting active lifestyles

Our commitment to green spaces extends to encouraging active lifestyles and helping Redrow homeowners get out and enjoy the outdoors.

At developments such as Roman Green in Chester, we've designed the neighbourhood to maximise open green areas, integrating walking and cycling paths that connect residents with nature and promote health and well-being.

We also help create spaces for sports and other outdoor activities. For example, at the Great Oldbury development in the South West, Redrow contributed to the community centre – equipped with a playground and nearby sports pitches.

Our commitment to green infrastructure

Our dedication to integrating green spaces is easy to see across all our developments, where we focus on creating environments that balance the needs of our homeowners with those of the local environment.

By thoughtfully incorporating parks, gardens, and natural landscapes, we can help make sure that our communities offer residents the benefits of nature right at their doorstep. Green spaces are not just amenities, but essential components of thriving, sustainable communities. By thoughtfully integrating nature into each and every development, we create places where people can enjoy the outdoors, connect with their neighbours, and experience the myriad benefits that green spaces provide.

Making the most of green spaces

So, how can you take advantage of the open spaces at our developments? As the days get longer and the sunshine returns, there’s no better time to enjoy the green spaces around you – or to create your own.

It doesn’t matter whether you’ve got a spacious garden or simply a modest patch of lawn, spring and summer open up endless possibilities for outdoor living and playing outside.

Get planting

In Redrow communities, shared green areas offer space to walk, play, picnic and unwind, but making the most of your garden can be just as rewarding.

Redrow homes are designed with generous garden spaces for our residents to design and fill as they please. Create a year-round green space by planting seasonal garden borders so there’s always something growing or blooming no matter the weather.

Create your dream outdoors space

Looking for garden design ideas? Planting a few pollinator-friendly flowers, growing herbs in pots, or setting up a quiet corner to read in the sun can turn any outdoor area into a personal sanctuary. If you’re feeling creative, raised beds or vertical planters are great for homegrown vegetables and create structure without taking up too much space.

For families, gardens offer a safe, natural place for children to play and explore. For others, they’re an escape; a chance to slow down and reconnect with the seasons. However you use it, your outdoor space is an extension of your home and your space.

Get out and explore your local area

Every Redrow development is designed for easy access to local amenities and places to explore. The UK is blessed with so many amazing outdoor adventures waiting to be had – whatever you’re in the mood for.

Pack the bikes in the car and head out for an adventure at the local trails. Or, head to a park for a stroll with a picnic when the weather’s nice. You’ll no doubt uncover a hidden treasure trove of places to explore with activities near your home.

Heading out to get some fresh air can also mean you learn more about your local area and try some new experiences. Start with a walk round the block, and then see where your adventure takes you!
