Brass band will perform thanks to donation

7th June 2021
Redrow - News - Chorley Brass Band Donation

A Leyland brass band has received a £365 donation that will allow them to put on a concert at Chorley Town Hall to help them raise vital funds when covid restrictions are lifted.

Leyland Band, based at Moss Side Industrial estate, will be able to afford to hire a room and transport for the instruments to Chorley Town Hall where, once covid restrictions allow, they will put on a concert with all proceeds going towards the running of the band.

The band is totally self-funded and constantly face the challenge of raising the money needed to rent the room they rehearse in twice a week and enter into competitions across the UK that also provide much-needed funding.

Formed in 1946, Leyland Band have won numerous national and international contests that have put Leyland on the ‘brass band globe’ as well as tutored hundreds of young musicians. Currently the band consists of 25 brass players, two percussionists and a musical director.

Chairman of the support committee for the band, Ken Lazenby says the concerts allow the band to promote themselves locally plus put on a great performance that the whole community can enjoy: “This year we are aiming to put on four matinee concerts and Redrow’s kind donation will help us accomplish one of these.”

“In 2019, the band qualified for the finals of both the British Open in Birmingham and The UK National Championships held at the Royal Albert Hall so we want to show off our fantastic musicians as much as we can. As we are completely self-funded, none of us get paid, rent alone each year costs us £7556 so concerts such as this one provide essential funding that stop us having to stop the band.”

Sian Pitt, sales director for Lancashire said: “Community groups such as Leyland Band are so important as they don’t just provide somewhere for musicians to hone their talents, but they also provide a place for members to socialise and feel part of a likeminded group.”

Leyland Band are one of twelve groups and good causes that have shared £5000 from our Leyland community fund. These funds are set up to provide support to communities close to where they build.
