Moving to ‘the White House’ has definitely proved a vote winner for Claire and her husband John.
The Halewood couple didn’t need to put it to a ballot when they relocated to The Grange in Burscough to be near their children and grandchildren, and they are delighted with their new home and happily ‘living the dream’.
While they affectionately call their new property ‘the White House’, it is in fact a beautifully rendered version of the Amberley design, which boasts a premium - some may even say presidential - specification.
“It’s exactly how we imagined it would be,” says Claire. “The other day John was looking out of the window and saw one of the grandchildren passing by on a bike. It’s just lovely.
“Covid taught us that there’s nothing more important than family. So while the new car and fancy holidays are nice things to have, we have everything we need and want right here – and it’s perfect.”
Claire and John have both taken early retirement to enjoy spending time with their family and making the most of their post-working lives.
Claire, 57, was a classroom assistant working in various schools across Liverpool and, latterly, a carer in South Liverpool – a post she returned to briefly to do her part during the pandemic. John, 55, works now only on a freelance basis for HMICFRS.
The couple had no intentions of moving at all, but when two of their daughters both moved to The Grange – and son John lives nearby in Aintree – the idea became increasingly appealing.
“John and I look after our grandchildren two days a week and, while it’s not too far away, we were travelling 40-45 minutes each time,” says Claire.
“When one of our daughters moved in, we were helping her to decorate and both said how nice it was, and when our other daughter moved here too, we wanted to live here but didn’t think we could afford it.
“It was our son-in-law who spotted the Amberley – that people refer to as the ‘White House on the corner’ – and we realised that we could buy it if we got what we wanted for our old house, and we did.”
The Amberley is a double-fronted, three-bedroom detached home, with a pretty porched entrance. It has a central hallway downstairs, with a kitchen and dining room on one side and a spacious lounge on the other. A handy cloakroom and utility complete the downstairs accommodation, while upstairs there are three double bedrooms – the main with en-suite – and a family bathroom.
“Our old house was a Redrow home,” adds Claire. “We’d been in that for around 28 years and we loved it as much on the day we left as when we moved in. We’d looked at other developers, now and again, but other housebuilders don’t have the quality and standard of Redrow. There’s nothing like it.
“And we were delighted to see that all the things that we’d like to have in a new build home, the deep skirting boards, the high ceilings - much appreciated when you’re 5ft 10in and 6ft 1in - the wide doors and a decent kitchen were all there. The layout is really well-planned, and it had the garage we needed,” added Claire.
