Jake Coward is looking positively to the future with hopes and plans for successful careers in the construction industry.
And, as National Apprenticeship Week approaches (February 7th-13), Jake has put it down to his decision to pursuing a rewarding apprenticeship with our Lancashire division.
A former pupil at Our Lady & St John College in Blackburn, Jake had always wanted a career with a trade.
The 19-year-old from Langho, Ribble Valley, says: “I didn’t want to take up further education or sit down in front of books, I knew I always wanted a hands-on career.
“I applied for my plumbing apprenticeship through my mentors and Redrow sub-contractors Home Gas Supplies, and I was a bit nervous at first, having to go for an interview with a big company.
“But it was exciting too, getting such an opportunity.”
Jake has combined hands-on experience, working at Oak Leigh Gardens in Whalley, with day-release at Preston College: “It’s challenging, but it’s a good challenge, and a rewarding one.
“I am learning so much, especially on site, where there’s so much experience and so many people to guide you and give you advice; and where you are constantly ‘doing’ things.
“And, of course, you’re being paid while you learn your trade.”
Now in his third year in which he will gain his NVQ Level 3 in plumbing, Jake is already looking to the future which dreams of qualifying in his trade and, in time, setting up his own business.
“And, having learned so much and gained experience from so many people, my apprenticeship with Redrow is the perfect grounding for that.”
