Pupils at a local school can now begin their journey as budding gardeners after a Midland’s housebuilder donated planters for the school’s garden.
Redrow Midlands donated £500 to Houlton School, in Rugby, which was used to purchase planters for the pupils to use as part of their Green Edge and Gardening co-curriculum activities. The secondary school will be using the new gardening features to grow vegetables and plants while using this as an opportunity to educate the youngsters on climate change and the importance of respecting the environment.
Houlton School, built in the grounds of the previous Rugby Radio Station, was founded in 2021 and forms part of a 1,200-acre development which, as well as new homes, will include further schools, a restaurant and a GP health centre. Redrow at Houlton, which forms part of the wider development, brings two, three, four and five-bedroom homes from the housebuilder's Heritage Collection.
Michael McCulley, Principal at Houlton School, said: “The planters that were donated to us were very gratefully received by the pupils. We’re a relatively new school – only opening in 2021 – so any item gifted to us is much appreciated. We fully intend on using these planters to educate the children on the environment, the importance of nature and developing their gardening skills.
“We’d like to thank Redrow Midlands for being so generous in their donation. Many of our students live in the Redrow at Houlton development, so it has been interesting to see them draw parallels between the home they live in and school.”
Elaine Cartwright, Sales Director at Redrow Midlands, says: “We were delighted to be able to support Houlton School with their request for planters. We are passionate about supporting the next generation to realise their passion and put the relevant skills into practice.
“It feels like we’ve been on such a journey with Houlton School as we watched it being built and now we’re seeing the pupils learn there. Many of the young people live in our Houlton development, which is three miles outside of Rugby. We’re very proud to be part of this thriving community and being involved in encouraging youngsters to spend time outdoors. We look forward to continuing to support the students at Houlton School as our Houlton community continues to grow.”
